In our country India, and many other developing countries, Blindness is major eye health issue. After cataract and glaucoma, It is the corneal blindness which we can restore with Corneal transplants done with help of donated eyes.
Who can donate the Eyes?
With few exceptions, almost anyone can donate their eyes..Yes Anyone..Age, Gender or Blood group does not matter..
Eye donation basiccally is donating one's person's eye after his/her death.
Remeber that Only corneal blind people are benefitted from donated eyes.
The cornea should be removed within 2-8 hours of death. This time may be longer in some cases but let this decision on eye collection team and doctor.
Because of newer technology, now Eyes of donated person can save the vision of two to four corneal blind people.
Eye removal takes only 10-15 minutes and leaves no scar or disfigurement of the face.
Donated eyes are never bought or sold. Eye donation is never refused.

Awareness about Eye Donation
The National Eye Donation Fortnight is observed every year from 25th August to 8th September. It is a campaign which aims to create mass public awareness about the importance of eye donation and to motivate people to pledge their eyes for donation after death.

How to donate your Eyes?
First, Talk to your family. Your family members must know that you want to bring light to someone\'s dark world when you leave this world. If you do not have your EYE DONATION PLEDGE CARD, Your nest of kin can decide and give consent for Eye Donation after your death.
Second, fill the pledge card which are available at Eye Banks and Government hospitals.
What are the MYTHS about Eye Donation?
Blindness in next birth: No, it's indeed and charity and gives you blessings of someone truely in need.
Aged people cannot do eye donation as their eyes are already weak.
It disfigures your face: Just the cornea is removed and not whole eyes.
It takes too much time: It just takes 10-15 minutes.
Eyes are sold: This is total act of charity and no money is involved at any step of Eye Donation.
Doctors let you die if you already have pledged for eye donation: At every step of doctors life, they are dedicated to only save your life.
Pledging your Eyes for donation is a MUST before death: If you have PLEDGE CARD, it helps for your eye donation but if not, your family members can give consent for eye donation.
